Fall Essentials ~ Part I

I realize it can be a little overwhelming for someone to determine “what do I actually need for this season?”. I will be posting some information this coming week on Instagram about what I think are fall “essentials”. I say essentials loosely because this will obviously vary person to person (and budget to budget).

A Neutral Sweater

We all know I love color however having a neutral sweater that can be styled more than one way is essential. For instance: a oatmeal colored cardigan sweater with buttons can by styled multiple ways. Buttoned and tucked into jeans, worn open, tucked into a skirt, etc. Additionally a neutral color is not as memorable and can be switched around more easily. Personally, I love my Old Navy sweater I purchased a few seasons ago!

Chelsea Blazer

This item is commonly referred to a “blazer” but is actually a long cardigan. If you do an internet search for this you will see lots of options come up across different retailers. This item is very useful and can be styled over either a fitted top or a button down. The only item I would not style it with is a flowy, loose top. This can be styled with jeans, straight leg trousers or over a dress (maxi or mini). It is ideal for people who live in warmer climates as it will provide just enough warmth! My Chelsea blazer is from J.Crew and is camel colored.

Blazer

What may come to mind is a traditional, a-line, fitted that one might wear to a job interview. However, a relaxed blazer is a great addition to your wardrobe. It can act as a “jacket” for those in warmer climates and it elevates a simple look without having to put much thought into it. I think a blazer is incredibly chic and if you look for the right one, it can last you a long time! One of my favorite blazers is one I purchased from Anthropologie. It is plaid and a little oversized.

Layering Piece

Having a few good layering pieces is essential to a wardrobe. I’d describe a layering piece as something you can wear under many things (cardigan, a blazer, sweater, etc.) and can also be a stand alone piece. These pieces are typically more fitted so they can be styled many ways. One of my favorite layering pieces is a hunter green sleeveless mock neck top by the brand Sanctuary. I purchased it a few years ago at Everlane. I spent a little more than I normally would have and I’m happy I did because the item doesn’t have any pilling on it and does not show any age despite wearing it all season! Some other examples of great layering pieces are: a mock neck top (one with sleeves or sleeveless), a classic button down (preferably white) and a fitted, stripped teeshirt (preferably black and/or navy stripes).

Let me know if you agree and what you consider to be a fall essential!
